Tips for a total kitchen makeover
Have you decided that a total kitchen remodel is the only way to go? Do you now have an open slate and no idea where to begin? Here are some helpful tips to get you started.
1. Pictures
The best place to start is with pictures. Gather many photos of kitchen designs you like from magazines, books and the internet. These pictures can help you figure out your design style and help you identify specific things that you would like in your kitchen.
2. Want list
Put together a list of things you want, from roll out trays to countertop material to new appliances.
3. Prioritize
Prioritize your “Want List.” Separate it into “Must have” and “Would like to have.” This is going to be very important when you move to expectations.
4. Budget
Figure out a realistic budget for what you want. This will include appliances, countertops, cabinets, lighting, flooring and plumbing (i.e. sinks, faucets).
5. Design
Now it is time to meet with a kitchen designer to assist you in putting together your dream kitchen. A good kitchen designer will help you create a functional, beautiful kitchen made just for you and how you utilize your cooking space. No more running across the room to get those spices that should be placed near the stove.
6. Expectations
Let’s get realistic. Start with your priority list and add only the items that were listed as “must have.” Remember, your budget may not allow for you to do everything all at once. You can always change things like kitchen lighting and appliances later on. Maybe you cannot afford a granite countertop, laminate is a great cost-effective alternative that will pay for itself in about a year or two. So keep your head up, anything you do to your kitchen, you’re already ahead of the game!
